The prairie flame leaf sumac is a small tree that naturally grows to form large colonies. However, it can easily be manipulated to grow into a single, or multi-trunked tree, reaching a height of about 30 feet at maturity. It has adapted quite well to central and north texas soils, and can withstand any heat and drought the Texas blazing summers bring. It bears reddish/brown berries in tight clusters, and the leaves turn a vibrant red in the fall, hence the name “flame leaf”.
